Butt Scrub 101: How to Exfoliate Your Bum

To exfoliate your butt, massage a gentle scrub onto wet skin in light circles two to three times a week, rinse, then pat dry. Keep it on the outer skin of your bum and thighs, go easy on sensitive spots, and skip any area that's irritated, broken or freshly shaved.

Your butt gets a lot of friction from sitting, sweat and tight clothes, and it's easy to forget in your routine. A little regular exfoliation keeps the skin there as smooth as the rest of you.

Why exfoliate your bum?

  • Smoother texture. Buffing away dead skin softens rough, dry patches.
  • Fewer ingrown hairs. If you shave or trim, regular exfoliation helps keep hairs from getting trapped.
  • Fresher skin. Clearing away buildup helps you feel clean and confident up close.

How to use a butt scrub, step by step

  1. Start in a warm shower. A few minutes of steam softens your skin.
  2. Scoop a small amount onto wet skin. A tablespoon or so covers both cheeks.
  3. Massage in slow circles for 30 to 60 seconds. Let the scrub do the work. No hard scrubbing.
  4. Rinse well with warm water.
  5. Pat dry instead of rubbing.
  6. Moisturize if your scrub doesn't already leave skin soft.

One heads-up: oil-based scrubs make shower and tub floors slippery. Rinse the floor when you're done.

How often should you exfoliate?

Two to three times a week works for most people. If your skin gets red or tender, scale back to once a week. Daily scrubbing is usually too much.

Where to scrub, and where not to

  • Yes: the outer skin of your butt, the backs of your thighs, hips, legs and feet.
  • Gently: areas where skin is thinner, like the inner thighs.
  • No: broken, irritated or sunburned skin, freshly shaved skin, and anywhere internal.

Shaving or trimming? Time it right

Exfoliate a day before you shave rather than right after. Scrubbing freshly shaved skin can sting and irritate. Between shaves, regular exfoliation helps keep ingrown hairs away.

What to look for in a scrub

  • Natural exfoliants like sugar or ground coffee that buff without being too sharp.
  • Nourishing oils and butters, like shea butter, jojoba and rosehip oil, so skin feels soft after you rinse.
  • A scent you love. If you have sensitive skin, patch test first.
  • A travel size if you want it on the go.

Our BUM Coffee Scrub combines real coffee and sugar with organic shea butter, jojoba, rosehip, coconut oil and vitamin E. It comes in an 8 oz jar and a 2 oz travel size.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a regular body scrub on my butt?

Yes. Most gentle body scrubs work well on the skin of your bum. Avoid very coarse scrubs, and anything that stings.

Is a coffee scrub good for your skin?

Coffee grounds make an effective, gentle exfoliant, and the scent is a nice bonus. Paired with oils and butters, a coffee scrub exfoliates and softens at the same time.

Should I exfoliate before a date?

Many people like a scrub in the shower beforehand to feel smooth and fresh. If your skin is sensitive, scrub earlier in the day or the day before so any redness has time to settle.

Can exfoliating help with butt bumps?

Regular, gentle exfoliation can help with roughness and ingrown hairs. If bumps are painful, spreading or don't improve, see a dermatologist.
