Fiber makes bottoming prep easier because it makes digestion more regular and stool more formed, so there's less to clean up. The two most popular options work differently: psyllium husk adds bulk and works within about a day, while prebiotic inulin feeds your gut bacteria and builds up over several days. Many Bottoms take both.

Why fiber helps with prep
Soluble fiber absorbs water and forms a soft gel, which helps stool hold its shape and move through more completely (Mayo Clinic). Formed, regular bowel movements are what make a quick rinse enough, instead of a long douching session.
The catch is consistency. Fiber helps most when you take it every day, with plenty of water.
Psyllium husk: the fast, bulk-forming fiber
Psyllium comes from the husk of Plantago ovata seeds. It's a bulk-forming fiber: it absorbs liquid in the intestines, swells and forms a softer, bulkier stool that's easier to pass (MedlinePlus).
- How to take it: stir a scoop into at least 8 ounces of water and drink it right away. MedlinePlus says to drink at least that much liquid with each dose.
- When you'll notice it: usually with your next regular bowel movement, often 12 to 18 hours later.
- Gas: psyllium tends to be gentler on gas than fermentable fibers.
- Good to know: take medications at a different time of day, since psyllium can affect how some are absorbed. Check with your pharmacist.

Inulin: the prebiotic fiber
Inulin is a natural fiber found in chicory root, onions and other plants. It's a prebiotic, meaning your good gut bacteria ferment it. That fermentation adds natural bulk and helps stool hold water. Research has looked at chicory inulin specifically for stool frequency and consistency (study).
- How to take it: inulin is easy to take as gummies, with water, at any time of day.
- When you'll notice it: gradually, over about 3 to 7 days of daily use.
- Gas: because it's fermented, inulin can cause some gas at first. Start with half a serving and work up.
- Good to know: inulin is a fructan. If you're on a low-FODMAP plan or know fructans bother you, check with your doctor first.

Psyllium vs. inulin at a glance
| Psyllium husk | Inulin (chicory root) | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Absorbs water and adds bulk | Feeds good gut bacteria |
| Usual form | Powder mixed in water | Gummies or powder |
| Typical timeline | Next bowel movement | 3 to 7 days of daily use |
| Gas | Lower | Possible at first |
| Best for | A quick, dependable effect | An easy daily habit |
Can you take both?
Yes. Taking gummies at one time of day and psyllium at another gives you two kinds of fiber working together. Together they add about 8 grams a day, still well under the 25 to 38 grams adults are advised to get.

How to choose a fiber gummy
Fiber gummies aren't all the same. When you compare them, check:
- Fiber type: look for a named fiber, like inulin from chicory root.
- Grams per serving: around 4 grams per serving is a meaningful dose.
- Servings per bottle: a 60-gummy bottle with a 2-gummy serving lasts a month. One with fewer gummies, or a 3-gummy serving, runs out sooner.
- Price per serving, not price per bottle.
- Sugar and fillers: no added sugar, no corn syrup and no gelatin if you're vegan.

Frequently asked questions
What's the best fiber for bottoming?
Both work. Psyllium is the faster, more direct option. Inulin is easier to stick with as a daily gummy. If you want a dependable routine, take both.
How long does fiber take to work for bottoming?
Psyllium usually shows its effect by your next bowel movement. Inulin builds over 3 to 7 days. Either way, daily use is what makes prep predictable.
Will fiber make me gassy?
Maybe, at first, especially with inulin. Start low, increase gradually and drink plenty of water. If symptoms are more than mild or last beyond two weeks, stop and talk to your doctor.
Do I still need to douche if I take fiber?
Many people find a quick rinse is enough once their digestion is regular, and some skip it. See our complete guide to bottoming prep.
